Tree Felling in Oldham
Our CHAS Accredited tree surgeons carry out tree felling services for commercial and domestic properties in the Oldham area. You may require our services if you have a damaged or diseased tree that requires more than just the pruning of branches. Another reason could be to clear vegetation from land to make room for property developments or to improve sunlight for your house. If the crown or roots of a tree are becoming a hazard to surrounding building foundations or plants, you should seek tree felling services. Without these, damage will subsequently occur.
We provide site surveys for all properties to assess whether felling is necessary. Surveys establish the felling method to be used according to the type of tree, surrounding obstructions, ground slope, and size of the tree. The most common tree felling methods are bore cutting, felling aids, tree driving, back pulling and sectional removal.

Tree Felling Laws
By law, before we fell a tree we must obtain a licence from the Forestry Commission England. This is to ensure that the tree is not protected and there are no wild birds, squirrels and other species habiting within it. Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) are a form of legal protection. Without a licence, you could be prosecuted if you remove a tree that is protected.
However, hedges, shrubbery and bushes are not protected under this order. As a result you can carry out hedge trimming and shrubbery removal without obtaining a licence of any kind. The different types of tree we can fell under licence are maple, magnolia, sorbus, oak, beech, cherry, holly, horse chestnut, birch, pine and many more.
Tree Pruning
Tree pruning may be necessary for your garden if there are crossing branches, fungal infections with the potential to spread, or dense shrubs. It is essential to prune all trees in your garden as they can grow excessively. Without adequate management, they can become too large for your garden, disturbing your other shrubbery, trees, and even house.
There are three main types of three pruning. These include crown thinning, crown raising and crown reduction. Thinning is a selective form of pruning which involves removing branches on the edge of the crown, reducing the density of the overall crown. Furthermore, this method increases the amount of sun that gets through to inner branches. Crown raising is the removal of lower branches to create space underneath for building development, pedestrians or vehicle access. Finally, reduction is the removal of branches to decrease the height or spread of the tree, to make it an attractive shape and keep its growth under control.
Health and Safety
When operating equipment like wedges, falling levers, hooks, tongs, hatchets axes and hammers, we follow the guidelines set by the Health and Safety Executive, as there are many risks associated with the felling of trees and other tree work. We assess all the risks involved with aerial work, tree climbing to extreme heights, and the operation of elevating work platforms that allow us to reach the heights we need to. We always use protective boots, leg protection, gloves, hearing protection, safety helmets and eye protection, especially when operating chainsaws and other machinery.
Tree Disease
It can sometimes be difficult to know when your tree has a disease, because you cannot see the organisms spreading with the naked eye. There are some common symptoms you can look out for such as leaf blotching, leaf spotting, scab and blistering, yellowing, chlorosis and defoliation. Common tree disorders are stem canker and galls and the rotting of the tree trunk and roots.
Our tree surgeons can diagnose the disease that the tree has, in order to select and perform the correct treatment. Common tree diseases include phytophthora root & crown rot, anthracnose, oak wilt, sooty mould and fire blight. Methods that we use for managing insect infestations and diseases within your tree are pruning and soil management, although if there is an insect infestation we can utilise pesticides and other materials to remove them from the woodland area.
We also specialise in hedge diseases, as hedges are vulnerable to attack from many pests and bacterial diseases. Common hedge pests are aphids, scale insects, vine weevil, caterpillars and spider mites. Bacterial diseases a hedge can contract include bacterial canker, which causes brown patches, and fireblight, which usually appears in the spring.
