Tree Pruning
As one of the most important methods of maintaining your trees, pruning is a technique of removing any limbs that are diseased, damaged or dead. To some extent, natural pruning happens as an attempt to maintain the trees’ structure. However, additional maintenance is required to improve the health of the rest of the tree. The most effective time of year to prune is later on in the winter or early spring, as the trees have not opened up their buds yet. Moreover some trees may still bleed sap at this time of the year, which is harmless.
Sometimes you may wish to prune your trees to maintain a strong structure and decrease the risk of storm damage. This method can also prevent insects and other bacterial decay organisms from getting inside the tree and causing irreversible damage. The two most effective methods of pruning are coppicing and pollarding:
Coppicing involves cutting bushes, trees or plants down almost to the ground. This encourages the plant to grow new shoots at a fast pace. Trees such as Cornus sanguinea, Salex alba and weigela benefit most from annual partial or full coppicing.
Pollarding involves allowing the tree to grow to the desired size with complete branches, before removing these branches down to a stump. Although, you must maintain these trees regularly to prevent rotting. Empress trees, captalpa and eucalyptus benefit from pollarding the most.
Tree Surgery
The arborists here at Arboricultural Services Treework Ltd can provide both domestic and commercial tree surgery in Altrincham. This includes work on gardens, business parks, construction sites, and parks. Our crown reduction service involves reducing the overall size of the tree, removing the branches and any broken deadwood to reduce the risk of the tree contracting an infection. We can also carry out crown lifting, which involves removing the branches situated lower down the tree. As a result, more sunlight can enter through the branches. Our tree surgeons are trained up to Lantra standards and have worked on a wide range of trees including walnuts and silver birch. Our tree surgery equipment includes chainsaws, harnesses, and felling wedges. We always use the necessary safety protection including gloves, hard hats and protective footwear.
Tree maintenance is different when the tree has just been planted or it is still very young. It is important to remember that there are certain aspects of maintenance that can be carried out. This includes mulching, which helps the tree to retain moisture from the soil whilst retaining temperature. Another important form of maintenance for young trees is regular watering directly to the root ball, although you have to wait for it to be fully grown before commencing pruning.
